I’m Jana Appleyard and I live with my donkeys and cats on Hvar island, Croatia where I teach yoga retreats and have a small B&B. I met my first donkey Pano in 2013. He and his friends have led me to discover even more about myself and our journey together has become part of my spiritual practice.

This morning we said goodbye to dear Max. I knew when I took him that he had terminal cancer but I wanted to give him the best life I could in his remaining months. He had the most wonderful personality and was a pleasure to be with. Dear sweet Farah , she is a most gentle cat . She was found sick on the streets as a kitten and I was asked to foster her until the lady who found her returned to take her back to Sweden. But the lady never came back and she stopped sending food after a few months and did not pay the Vet bill that was three years ago. Farah is now sick again and she will need extensive test to find out what is wrong with her. I will always help every animal that I have here it is not fair for them to be neglected or forgotten about but finances are really bad at the moment and I am struggling to feed all of the animals ,vet care on top of that is incredibly expensive. People often say to me don’t take so many animals then but I am not going let them die on the streets. It is easy to turn your head and think somebody else will do it, but every animal deserves a chance and no one deserves to suffer. Dear brave Lucy has not been so good recently, her neurological problems are quite bad and she has a lot of problems in her spine. However we never give up with Lucy. She is very brave and strong. Thank you so much to our vet Marinka who has helped us so much . She suggested we try this medication called Adequan. We had enough for a few doses and it really helped Lucy. However it is not available in this country. After a big search from various kind friends we managed to locate it in France. However, it is very expensive it is actually 397 euro but going to Croatia it will get 25% VAT on it bringing it to almost €500. In the winter I struggle immensely to even feed all the animals going without many things to provide food for the many animals.I do not have the money to pay for this medication but we desperately need it as it has helped Lucy so much . My favourite thing to do it walk high in the hills with the donkeys and pony . We go out for around 5 hours and enjoy the peace and beauty .
